What is a Sociable Dog?

At Fetch we love to create fun play groups with compatible dogs! In order to do this safely and effectively, so that we’re all having a great time, we carefully match dogs based on size, temperament, play style and more! Being fluent in dog body language is also a super important part of our job!

We require all of our guests to be ‘sociable’, but that doesn’t actually translate to ‘really playful!!!!!’. In fact, ideally they are calm and relaxed, with a little curiosity. The above image definition is spot on!

A sociable dog is one that communicates well with other dogs, it understands an invitation to play as clearly as it understands a declined invitation. It is comfortable and confident in knowing how to respond to another dog’s cues.

Dog language can be very subtle to us, but cues that we might miss are seen by dogs, what makes them sociable is how respectful they are of these cues.

Not all dogs have had enough experience in a social setting and not all dogs are suitable for our environment, some dogs love people but are not ‘dog dogs’. Just like humans, they all have preferences that we need to appreciate and understand to ensure fun for all!
